Rebuilding Trust After Infidelity: Is It Really Possible?

Experiencing infidelity in your relationship can make you feel like everything is falling apart. There is no greater betrayal than finding out someone you love and trust has cheated on you with another person.

It’s not uncommon for relationships to end when infidelity is involved, but that’s not always the case. Some people are ready to admit that they made a mistake, and if both partners are willing, things can work out and move forward.

But, is it really possible to rebuild trust after infidelity?

The short answer is yes. However, it’s often a long journey that requires both partners to be actively involved. So, what exactly can you expect as you walk that road together?

Manage Your Emotions

It’s important to allow yourself time to acknowledge and process what happened. There is no perfect timeline to work through the grief of infidelity. However, while you’re healing, allow yourself to be open to the possibility of rebuilding trust over time. If you allow your emotions to completely take over, you might get lost in feelings of frustration, sadness, or even bitterness. While you have every right to feel those things, resting there won’t allow you to move forward.

Practice Forgiveness

Forgiveness is often easier said than done when your trust has been betrayed. Remind yourself that it’s not a onetime thing. You can’t just tell your partner you forgive them and move on right away.

Rather, it’s a process and a journey. You have to be willing to forgive them over and over again, because you’ll experience emotions each day that will make that harder.

Prioritize Self-Care

Self-care is always important. However, if you’ve experienced unfaithfulness in your relationship, it’s more essential than ever. Prioritize taking care of your physical and mental well-being. Engage in hobbies you enjoy. Stay physically active. Remain connected to your support system.

By practicing self-care, you’ll improve your confidence and self-esteem and realize that, no matter what, you deserve kindness and compassion.

Communicate Frequently

Whether you were the betrayed partner or the one having the affair, your top priority should be communication. If you broke trust in the relationship, acknowledge your role, rather than trying to downplay it. You can (and should) try to give your partner your perspective, but don’t make excuses or play the blame game.

Rather, acknowledge what you did and show true remorse. You also have to be willing to be patient. Your partner won’t be able to forgive you overnight, and rebuilding trust is a process.

It’s important for both partners to be willing to open up and be vulnerable. Ask questions and be prepared to answer others. You don’t have to constantly dwell on the affair, but recognize that it will be a topic of conversation for quite a while.

Next Steps

Thankfully, you don’t have to do any of this on your own. If you’re both committed to working things out, it can be difficult to know where to start or to understand how to communicate effectively.

Attending couples therapy can help with affair recovery. It allows you to bring underlying issues out into the open so you can work through them together. Once everything is at the surface, you can share your feelings and develop strategies that will help you improve communication, build trust, and foster greater intimacy within your relationship.

Therapy can also help you establish strategies in your relationship to prevent setbacks, so infidelity is less likely to occur in the future. While it’s essential that both partners are on board, an affair recovery program can help you get back on track and end up making your relationship stronger than ever.
