Brainspotting Therapy Explained: How It Works and Who It Helps

If you’ve ever tried to talk through emotional pain in therapy and felt like the words just didn’t reach the root of what you’re feeling, you’re not alone. Some experiences are so deeply embedded in the body and nervous system that traditional talk therapy can’t fully access them.

That’s where brainspotting therapy comes in. It’s a gentle but powerful approach that helps the brain and body release trauma, stress, and emotional blocks from the inside out.

What Is Brainspotting Therapy?

Brainspotting is a therapeutic technique developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003. He discovered this approach while working with trauma survivors and noticed that where a person looks affects how they feel. This led to a method that accesses the body’s natural healing process by focusing on both where you’re looking and what you’re feeling.

During brainspotting, a therapist helps you identify specific eye positions called “brainspots” that correspond to where trauma or emotional distress is stored in your brain. By maintaining your gaze on these spots while processing difficult emotions or memories, your brain can access and release what’s been stuck. It creates space for your nervous system to do what it naturally wants to do: heal.

How Brainspotting Works

A session typically begins with identifying what you’d like to work on, whether that’s a specific memory, physical sensation, or emotional issue. Your therapist will guide you to notice where you feel it in your body and how intense it feels.

Your therapist may use a pointer to help you find the spot where your eyes naturally want to rest when you think about your concern. You might notice your eyes pulling in a certain direction, or feel a shift in your body that signals you’ve found the right spot.

As you hold your gaze on that brainspot, you simply notice what comes up, including sensations, emotions, images, or thoughts. You might experience tingling, warmth, or waves of emotion. Your therapist stays present with you throughout, offering support while your brain does its own processing work. Think of it as a combination of mindfulness, neuroscience, and somatic healing working together.

Who Can Benefit from Brainspotting?

Because brainspotting works directly with the brain and body’s natural healing system, it can help with a variety of challenges, including:

  • Trauma and PTSD: Processing experiences that feel stuck or overwhelming
  • Anxiety: Releasing physical tension and worry held in your nervous system
  • Depression: Addressing underlying pain or disconnection
  • Grief and loss: Working through the physical and emotional weight of heartache
  • Chronic stress or fatigue: Helping your nervous system find regulation
  • Performance anxiety: Whether related to work, sports, or creative pursuits

Brainspotting is incredibly versatile and can be used as a primary therapy or alongside other approaches, depending on your individual needs and goals.

The Neuroscience of Healing

Brainspotting works because of how trauma stores itself in the brain. When you experience something overwhelming, your brain’s survival systems kick in faster than your conscious mind can process. These memories get filed away in areas like the amygdala and brainstem—regions that don’t use language. By using eye position to access these deeper brain regions, brainspotting helps your nervous system complete the processing it couldn’t finish when the trauma first occurred.
